Creating Ethernet Cable using T568B standard

Computer networks play a massive role in our daily lives. People nowadays rely mostly on electronic communication, you could say that electronic communication is one of our basic needs. But have you ever wondered how data is transferred from one device to another? There are numerous means but all of it comes down to the basic mediums, Ethernet cables. Ethernet cables are commonly used for every device from personal computers to servers and long-range communications. Throughout this blog, we will be creating three (3) different types of Ethernet Cables using the T568B standard which are: Straight Through, Crossover, and Rollover.

OBJECTIVES

  • To learn how to make the three (3) different Ethernet cables namely, straight-through, roll-over, and cross-over using the T568B standard.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • RJ-45 connector (at least 6 pieces)
  • UTP Cat-5 or Cat-5e cable (3m / 1m each cable)
  • Crimping Tool
  • LAN cable tester

PROCEDURES

  • Gather all the necessary materials.
  • Rip off carefully the UTP jacket using the crimping tool for at least ¾ inch in both ends of each UTP cables.
  • Untangle the twisted wires and straighten them.
  • Cut the white fiber or thread since this is not needed.
  • Arrange the wires according to the color scheme and make sure that all the wires are perfectly aligned.
  • Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector, make sure that the wires and the rubber jacket are firmly inserted.
  • Use the Crimping tool to crimp the wires permanently into the RJ-45.
  • Test the Ethernet cable using the LAN cable tester and check the light indicators according to the color scheme.

CONCLUSION

At the end of the activity we learned how to make the different types of Ethernet cables and what type of cable is used for different electronic devices: Straight-Through wired cables are most commonly used to connect a host to client; Crossover cables are most commonly used to connect two hosts directly; Rollover cables, sometimes referred to as Yost cables are most commonly used to connect to a devices console port to make programming changes to the device. We also learned that it is much cheaper to make your own Ethernet cable rather than buying ready-made Ethernet cables.
